Chapter Twenty-Three

Grace saw the unknown number flashing on her mobile phone and excused herself from the kitchen to answer it.

‘Grace Carter?’ the voice on the other end asked.

‘Andy. How long has it been?’ she replied.

‘Not long enough,’ he replied with a sarcastic laugh. ‘But then forever wouldn’t be long enough when it comes to you.’

‘Oh, you flatter me.’

‘Huh,’ he snorted. ‘So, what is it?’

‘I need some information.’

‘Don’t we all.’

‘I’m serious. My granddaughter has been kidnapped.’

‘Oh,’ he said, suddenly his tone more serious. Not only because of the gravity of the situation, but also because he now knew she was about to ask him to put his entire career on the line.

Andy Dixon had been the young and upcoming Sergeant who had put her ex-husband, as well as half of the Liverpool underworld, away for long stretches over twenty years earlier. He had acted on information that Grace provided, and the case had made his career, leading him to his current position, which was so high up in the National Crime Agency that Grace didn’t even know what his title was.

That was how they’d met, at least, but that wasn’t why he owed her a debt.

‘MIT are handling the case and they have a list of witnesses that I can’t get access to. But I need those names, Andy. She’s been missing for almost fourteen hours now.’

‘Can’t you use your usual contacts?’

‘This is my son’s daughter. You know who he is. They’re keeping this list locked down to a select few people.’

‘If I access this, one of those people could lose their job.’

‘If you don’t, my granddaughter could lose her life,’ she snapped. ‘And if that happens…’

‘Okay,’ he replied with a sigh. She didn’t need to finish that sentence. ‘God, I miss you.’

‘Two minutes ago you told me that forever wouldn’t be long enough, so which is it?’

‘Can’t it be both?’

‘I suppose.’

‘You miss me?’

‘Not anymore,’ she told him honestly.

‘Ouch.’ He laughed softly.

‘A lot has changed in twenty-two years, Andy.’

‘Not everything though, it seems. You always know how to get hold of me even when I’m off-grid.’

‘You tell me every time you change your number. Worried in case I call your office looking for you?’

‘Maybe. And because I owe you my life, Grace Sumner, and no amount of time will change that.’

‘It’s Carter now, as you well know.’

‘Hmm.’

‘I miss him though,’ Grace admitted. ‘Every single day.’

‘Me too,’ Andy said quietly. ‘So you want this list?’

‘Yes. How quickly can you get it for me?’

‘As soon as possible. Twenty-four hours, max.’

‘I don’t have that long,’ she said, her brows knitted in a frown.

‘I will do everything I can to get it to you sooner.’

‘Thank you.’

Grace ended the call and slipped her phone into the pocket of her jeans as she thought about her old friends.

During Nathan’s trial, Andy had fallen in love with her best friend, Marcus. They had been perfect for each other. With Nathan in prison and her on/off relationship with Ben going through an off patch, she had been their third wheel.
